Congenital cataract surgery

Congenital Cataract Surgery
What Does It Involve?
This is an operation to remove the opaque content of the crystalline lens in infants and children with congenital cataract.
When Is It Carried Out?
- When the cataract starts to affect the child’s visual development, it must be operated on as soon as possible.
- If visual development is only slightly affected, it needs to be monitored regularly by a specialized ophthalmologist.
- Paediatric cataract surgery carries risks and complications, so surgery may be delayed if visual development remains good despite the cataract.
- For large cataracts that significantly impair vision, surgery should be performed as soon as possible.
Timing of Surgery:
- Bilateral Congenital Cataracts: Best treated within the first 10-12 weeks of life.
- Unilateral Congenital Cataracts: Best treated within the first 6 weeks of life.
- Early intervention within these timeframes offers the best prognosis for visual recovery.
Associated Pathologies:
- Congenital Cataracts
