Collagen Inducers

What Are Collagen Inducers?

Collagen inducers are injectable products used to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen, a protein that forms the structural fibers in the skin and bones. These treatments help to eliminate facial sagging and achieve a firmer, more youthful-looking dermis by boosting collagen production.

At the IMO, two types of collagen-inducing substances are used, applied based on each patient’s needs:

  1. Calcium Hydroxyapatite (Radiesse):

    • Stimulates collagen production in the superficial layers of the skin.
    • Known for producing the ‘V-effect,’ which restores a youthful, lifted appearance to the face.
    • Often used for a non-surgical facelift.
    • Can be combined with Ultherapy for enhanced results.
  2. Polylactic Acid (Sculptra):

    • Has a more potent collagen-stimulating effect than Radiesse.
    • Indicated for restoring skin volume lost due to aging or significant weight loss.

When Are They Used?

Collagen inducers are particularly beneficial for:

  • Mature skin showing signs of sagging, thinning, or volume loss.
  • Individuals who have experienced substantial weight loss, leading to a loss of facial volume.

Prior Examination

Before treatment, the oculofacial specialist will:

  • Perform a thorough examination of the eyelid and periocular area.
  • Take photographs to assess the patient’s condition before and after treatment, and in follow-up sessions if applicable.

During Treatment

  • The face is cleaned, and topical anaesthesia is applied to the treatment area.
  • The collagen inducers are injected.
  • The duration of treatment and number of sessions depends on the product used.

Treatment Details

| Product | Approximate Duration | Sessions Required | |-----------------------------|--------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------------------| | Calcium Hydroxyapatite (Radiesse) | 15-20 minutes | 1 session (more may be needed depending on patient’s needs) | | Polylactic Acid (Sculptra) | 20-30 minutes | At least 2 sessions (1-month intervals), more may be required |

Summary

  • Collagen inducers help restore facial firmness and volume by stimulating collagen production.
  • Radiesse is ideal for mild to moderate sagging and provides a quick lifting effect.
  • Sculptra is best suited for patients who need more significant volume restoration, particularly after aging or weight loss.
