Blepharoplasty

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the most common type of aesthetic eyelid surgery. It is performed to correct bags and remove excess skin from the lower and upper eyelids. This procedure addresses issues such as puffiness under the eyes, drooping eyelids, and other signs of aging.

When Is It Performed?

The majority of blepharoplasties are performed to:

  • Remove bags under the eyes, which are often caused by aging, congenital factors, or conditions like renal or cardiac diseases.
  • Correct skin relaxation around the eyes, reduce eyelid muscle laxity, and remove excess orbital fat.
  • In cases of drooping upper eyelids, blepharoplasty may be done to improve peripheral vision, especially when eyelid sagging interferes with sight.

How Is It Performed?

  • The surgery targets the eyelids, removing excess skin, tightening the orbicularis muscle, and sometimes removing orbital fat or eyelid bags.
  • At the IMO, laser-assisted blepharoplasty is performed to eliminate visible cuts, reduce haematoma, minimize inflammation, and ensure faster recovery.

Risks

Blepharoplasty is a delicate procedure that requires an experienced specialist. Choosing a surgeon with deep knowledge of the eye and periocular area is crucial to achieve good results and minimize risks.

  • Main complication for lower eyelids: Retraction (can occur in 20% of cases), which causes the lower eyelid to remain too low, leaving the eye exposed. This can lead to ocular dryness and be aesthetically unpleasing.

At the IMO, the use of transconjunctival laser prevents visible incisions and avoids retraction.

After the Surgery

  • When the lower eyelid is operated on, transconjunctival laser blepharoplasty is used, ensuring no visible incisions and preventing retraction.
  • Blepharoplasty is often combined with other treatments like chemical peeling or laser resurfacing for enhanced results.
  • Post-surgery care:
    • Avoid sun exposure.
    • Continuously moisturize the treated area to promote healing.

Key Points

  • 1 incision in the lower lid (100% invisible).
  • Most requested aesthetic facial surgery, second only to rhinoplasty.
  • It is a safe procedure when performed by a skilled specialist, with a focus on avoiding complications like retraction.
